Pausing to Make a Difference

Pausing to Make a Difference

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves,
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways,
then I will hear from heaven
and will forgive their sin
and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14

It’s one thing to discuss making a difference. It’s another thing altogether to make that difference.

2 Chronicles 7:14 is one of those verses of Scripture that Christians of Western culture enthusiastically recite but sometimes are less enthusiastic about putting its principles into practice. To be fair, the doing of the things we’re called to do in the passage takes time, effort, dedication. And Western culture doesn’t allow much – well – time for the effort and dedication required by the calling.

But please hear what I’m about to say. As Christ-following Americans, regardless of whatever political affiliation with whatever political party we each choose, we can no longer afford to treat the call of the passage as an option to be exercised at will. If it wasn’t clear prior to the events of the past week, it should be crystal clear today that this call is a life-or-death necessity upon which the future of our country hangs.

So will you – would you – please bear with His Own Heart Ministries as we postpone the conclusion of our current series, The Difference Maker, for another week and join us between now and then for some hands-on practice in – well – making a difference? Meanwhile, it’s also a great time to refresh your memory or catch up on the series’ previous posts. Feel free to access Part 1or Part 2through their hyperlinks.

The following prayer is shaped around the words penned by King David in Psalm 40:1-3. For the purposes of this week’s post, the phrasing of the prayer is coordinated with the immediate needs of our nation as we await an outcome that – either way – will affect the course that our nation takes in the days and weeks ahead. These are such crucial days!

So here’s what I’m doing this week, and I’d love for you to join me. Can we commit for at least seven days to examine our hearts, repent of any sins hampering our personal relationship with Jesus, then make some form of the words below a part of a daily quiet- or prayer-time? I’d like to fervently thanks each person who chooses to stand in the proverbial gap for our country and its God-given blessings.

Holy, Gracious, All-Knowing Father,
in the midst of human turbulence and confusion, please help us
– individually and as a nation –
to wait patiently for You and Your perfect timing;
to experience Your sweet and comforting presence
amid the commotion, the chaos, the clamor that our nation has witnessed in the past weeks.

Lord, we know indisputably that You are the Answer
not only to every ailment and schism in our nation,
but also to each issue, illness, situation, relationship, dysfunction
that affects each of Your children in the here and now.

You – You alone – have the unceasing power
to repair, to restore and to heal us
individually,
nationally,
wholly.

In your grace, we humbly ask to be given the strength
to lay down every one of burdens at the foot of the cross of Christ
in order to watch in amazement as you move in clarity and precision
to do what mere man cannot.

Help us to trust You fully with the lives, minds and hearts of loved ones and leaders
so that You can perfect Your work within, around and through them.

Please enable each of us to set aside our human pride,
to realize that we alone are powerless to fix things
and desperately need Your rescue.

Mighty God, give us the gumption, the faith, the trust
to get out of Your way and let You move!

In the precious and beautiful Name of Your Son,

Jesus Christ,

Who is forever praised,

Amen.
